The PEL Benefit

Since 2000, we have paid more than $81 million to protect GE employees from the financial consequences of successful claims, lawsuits, and judgments against them.

The Personal Excess Liability (PEL) voluntary employee benefit is one of the most effective ways you can protect yourself. If you’re sued, it pays the difference between the amount of a judgment or settlement against you and the limits of your auto or home policy. For example, say there’s a $500,000 judgment against you and your auto policy’s liability limit is only $100,000; the PEL policy would cover the $400,000 difference.

It applies when you are sued for your actions that resulted in:6

  • Property damage to another’s belongings

  • Bodily injury to other people

  • “Personal injury” (such as libel or slander)

While the PEL benefit provides protection similar to that of an umbrella policy, it’s priced as an employee benefit, so it’s less costly than an umbrella policy purchased outside of the program.
