Take Steps to Protect Your Home from Thieves
Unfortunately, there are over 1.2 million home burglaries annually in the United States. The good news is that it is easier than ever to protect your home from burglaries and invasions. Security systems and technology have become increasingly advanced and more affordable to households.
Here are some tips on how to reduce the chances of someone breaking in whether you are at home or away.
- Always make your home look occupied.
- Consider using cameras that are connected to your smartphone device. You can control when and where you want lights to be on or off. You can also see if someone has broken into your home.
- Have automatic timers installed to turn lights on and off at different times in rooms throughout the house.
- Install motion detection lighting.
- Install alarm systems, motion detectors, or security cameras.
- An affordable home monitoring system can be programmed to notify you via text, email, or phone call when someone enters the residence.
- Don’t announce your plans to be away.
- Avoid posting your vacation or travel plans on social media sites, as potential thieves can use that information to learn when your house will be vacant.
- Stop mail, online shopping, and newspaper delivery.
- An easy clue for burglars is when mail or packages accumulate on your front doorstep. Either have a neighbor regularly pick up delivered items or stop them altogether.
- Secure external doors and windows.
- Use deadbolt locks and security-type hinges. Install slide locks or other equivalent security locks on sliding glass doors.
- Store and secure valuables.
- se a safe deposit box or other secure offsite location.
- Don’t leave spare keys in “hidden” locations. Chances are that hiding spot you think is inconspicuous is actually no challenge for a burglar to figure out. Removing all keys from outdoor locations is more prudent.
- Secure and lock the garage. Even if the entrances to the house are all locked, a burglar can get into your garage and steal tools, appliances, or other valuable items.
Burglaries can happen anywhere, at any time. Common sense will rule the day, however. It can be as simple as always locking your doors and windows when you are out. Take the right preventative measures to protect yourself, your loved ones, and everything you have worked hard for.
