A successful lawsuit or claim against you could easily cost you hundreds of thousands of dollars, or even more. While your Auto or Home policy would provide some coverage, a settlement or judgment against you could quickly exceed the policy limit. If so, it’s likely that your assets would have to be used to pay the balance.

Fortunately, an Umbrella policy can step in to provide coverage when your Auto or Home policy’s coverage limits run out.

An Umbrella policy pays the difference between the amount of a judgment or settlement against you and the limits of your Auto or Home policy. For example, say there’s a $500,000 judgment against you resulting from a car accident and your Auto policy’s liability limit is only $100,000; an Umbrella policy would cover the $400,000 difference.7
